James Coffee Co. (San Diego, California)

Coffee Culture meets Rock ‘n’ Roll.

Coffee culture and photography are two of my greatest passions, alongside family as indispensable elements in my life. Hours spent absorbing YouTube videos and tutorials on photography inevitably lead you to the world of Peter McKinnon. If you've delved into more than three of Peter's videos, chances are you've crossed paths with James Coffee in San Diego, California.

While confined to my home during the COVID-19 pandemic, I sought solace by ordering three bags of coffee beans from James Coffee. The experience was nothing short of outstanding, prompting me to savor those beans and resist the urge to consume them too quickly. The thrill peaked when I discovered that an upcoming work conference would be hosted in San Diego. Without hesitation, I began charting out potential coffee shops and roasters to explore, with James Coffee claiming the top spot on my list.

Touching down in San Diego, I executed a well-mapped-out plan. Each morning before the conference meetings, I'd wake up early and embark on a coffee shop adventure from my list. Given the distance from the conference hotel, James Coffee had to wait until the trip's concluding day. Following an Uber ride to 2355 India Street, I stood at the entrance of what's widely hailed as one of the best coffee shops in San Diego, marked by an owl above the doorway. I had finally reached my destination.

I flew 2,552 miles to experience James Coffee Co. and I was not disappointed. Take my advice, take a journey to James Coffee and have that latte.

Nestled in a shared space that echoed the vibes of an airport hangar, James Coffee coexisted in a cluster of permanent shops, including a barbershop conveniently adjacent to the coffee pickup spot. Sporting a cool rock 'n' roll meets Southern Cali vibe, James Coffee encapsulated the epitome of a hipster coffee haven, tailored for serious enthusiasts. Mere seconds in, it was evident – these coffee lovers hadn't purchased ground coffee in years; they opted for whole beans, equipped with either Chemex or espresso machines at home. I had found my tribe.

Opting for a caramel latte, I also purchased a bag each of whole beans and a Mexican blend, adding to my suitcase for the journey back to Pennsylvania. For weeks upon my return, I shared with everyone I encountered the tale of my visit to what I deemed one of the country's finest coffee shops. To this day, that sentiment remains unwavering.

If you find yourself in California and are serious about immersing yourself in the world of coffee and its culture, James Coffee Co. is a non-negotiable addition to your must-stop locations.

With tasting notes of Chocolate, Grapefruit, and Apricots, those of you who appreciate a sweeter light roast will be in love with El Jaguar.
